Unfortunately, Jaguar’s penchant for downmarket plastics continues, which plays a role in an overall ambiance that doesn’t quite match its price tag. Also, the multipurpose touchscreen that controls audio, navigation, and climate systems could use a little work. the interior is just a pretty dramatic departure from the standard Jaguar look, with a contemporary dashboard design and the availability of aluminum trim rather than wood. It’s simple and intuitive in concept, but we’ve found it frustrating in practice, with a display interface that’s neither sensitive nor accurate enough.

A few years later, Jaguar made an effort to broaden its product line with the introduction of a lower-priced, entry-luxury compact sedan referred to as the X-Type. Ford’s influence (and financial support) was evident with the 1997 launch of Jaguar’s XK8 and supercharged XKR sports cars. Unfortunately, this model sold poorly, as its modest European Ford sedan underpinnings turned out to be a liability. Powering both was Jaguar’s new AJ-V8, a compact yet powerful engine that was also found in certain Land Rover vehicles. Around this time around, Jaguar’s old-school traditional styling grew stale as competitors moved into the newest millennium with cutting-edge, modern designs inside and out.

The XKR comes with a supercharged version of the exact same engine puffed around produce 420 hp and 412 lb-ft of torque. Our test of an XKR Convertible revealed a 0-60 time of 4.9 seconds, Jaguar XK with the coupe being a few ticks quicker. The 1980s saw Jaguar continuing to enhance the bar in performance with the launch of the XJ-S HE and a true-world supercar, the XJ220.

By this time around, however, Jaguar’s cars had also developed a reputation for questionable reliability, electrical problems being the chief source of owners’ angst. Increased competition from German automakers and adverse exchange rates didn’t help matters either. A decade later, Jaguar introduced the XJ6C and XJ12C coupes to join the sedans. By the mid-’70s the lovely E-Type was replaced by the relatively bland XJ-S. This decision ultimately resulted in a complete buyout of Jaguar XK by Ford in 1990. At one point, the XJ12 was the fastest production sedan of its day. Without much capital to work well with to boost matters, the company made a decision to pursue a partnership with another company.

The convertible’s soft top does a fantastic job of soundproofing when up, and it disappears under an umbrella of hard tonneau in only 18 seconds at the push of a button. The XK 120 proved quite popular and helped Jaguar set up a strong presence in the sports vehicle market. By the 1950s, Jaguar had begun exporting luxury vehicles to the United States. The luxury sedan was joined that year by the XK 120, a low rider that was the fastest production automobile of its day — its name indicating its top speed. In 1956, the car took the prize at the Monte Carlo Rally. Later in the decade, Jaguar added the Mark VIII and Mark IX to its lineup. Then came the XK 150 which was obviously much faster, though not quite as curvaceously alluring whilst the 120/140 models. Meanwhile, the XK became the XK 140 as performance increased.
